Student/Staff/Faculty of the Month has been officially changed to:

Student/Staff/Faculty of the Semester

Fall 2006

Dr. Delon Barfuss is Faculty of the Semester for Fall 2006

Dr. Delon W. Barfuss is chair of the CMBP program in the Department of Biology at Georgia State University.  He received both his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Zoology from Utah State University in Logan, Utah.  He chose Utah State because it was fairly close to his hometown of Downey, Idaho, and he could go home on the weekends to help his father farm.  From Utah State, he moved to the University of Arizona Medical School where he received his PhD. in Physiology.  He chose the University of Alabama at Birmingham as his first position after receiving his PhD.  He worked at UAB for 3 years as a Fellow and 7 years as a Research Associate.  In 1984, Dr. Barfuss joined the Biology Department at Georgia State University and has been here ever since.  He says that he is most proud of the fact that he has contributed to a better understanding of the kidney nephron and feels that his career has focused on understanding the basics of kidney transport because when he began, it seemed to be a blank slate.  "The questions back then were very basic, 'How does the kidney work?', 'What are the transport mechanisms', it was a little easier to get grants!" he says, comparing his earlier career with current state of the Biology field.

Interestingly, Dr. Barfuss has a pilots license and loves flying Ultralight planes.  He'd like to buy one someday, but only a 4-cycle engine, as the 2-cycle engines "tend to quit on you" he says.  He says that he enjoys fly fishing about once a month and has fished the Chattahoochee and the Chattooga Rivers to name a few.  He recently completed a solo 10 mile hike of Rottenwood Creek in Marietta, GA, during which he surveyed the condition of the creek for the Sierra Club in which he his very active.  Needless to say, he found a lot of interesting trash and actually met a few people along the way!  Dr. Barfuss is also active in the Astronomy club and hopes to some day become involved with the Women's League of Voters.  He plans to retire within the "next few years" but he would still like to teach and finish up on papers that he's been wanting to write but just hasn't had the time for.  Congratulations, Dr. Barfuss on becoming the BGSA faculty of the semester for Fall 2006!
