Overview
No matter which way you go, you can’t go wrong when you join a fraternity or sorority at Georgia State. The 21 fraternities and sororities stand out as a unique and life-long involvement opportunity. A tradition as rich as Greek Life offers students an opportunity to experience leadership development, to serve handson in the metro-Atlanta and campus community, to network with local alumni to form career connections during college and after graduation, and to make lifelong friendships, among many other benefits. In addition, at Georgia State as well as nationally, involvement in fraternities and sororities increases students’ chances of graduating from college, as well as enhances their overall academic achievement.
Scholarship development is very important to each organization. A minimum grade point average is required to join as well as to maintain membership; therefore, groups have established incentives and programs designed to strengthen members’ academic success.
Fraternity and sorority chapters at Georgia State are self-governing and
organized into four governing councils. Each council has its own distinct mission and purpose; however, they come together under the over-arching Greek Council for the betterment of our fraternal community.
Many of the fraternities and sororities occupy a suite on the fourth floor of
the University Center, giving them a place to call home and enabling members to study, fellowship with friends, and hold meetings. In fall 2009, Georgia State will open its doors to fraternity and sorority housing on the corner of Piedmont and Edgewood Avenues.
Interfraternity Council (IFC)
is the governing body for five nationally recognized fraternities on campus. Organizations include: Kappa Sigma, Pi Kappa Phi, Sigma Nu, and Theta Chi. Chapters in this council conduct an informal recruitment process held throughout the year. This is a mutual selection process that requires interested members to attend fraternity-sponsored recruitment events at the beginning of each semester. During fall semester, IFC sponsors an official Bid Day event for all new members. To register, stop by the Office of Student Life and Leadership or look online for the Fraternity and Sorority Interest form.
National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)
is the governing body for the seven historically African American nationally recognized fraternities and sororities at Georgia State. Organizations include: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Chapters in this council conduct membership intake at various times throughout the year. Each chapter has a process specific to their organization. Information is generally provided through fliers and campus marketing at least two weeks prior to any informational sessions. Stop by the Office of Student Life and Leadership or visit the website to complete a Fraternity and Sorority Interest form to receive further information regarding membership intake and upcoming activities or events.
Panhellenic Council (NPC)
is the governing body for five National Panhellenic Conference sororities on campus. Organizations include: Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Zeta, Phi Mu, and Zeta Tau Alpha. Chapters in this council conduct a formal recruitment process early in fall semester. This is a mutual selection process that requires pre-registration, orientation and attendance in four rounds of recruitment. To register, visit the Office of Student Life and Leadership or look online for the Panhellenic Formal Recruitment registration form. Informal recruitment may occur throughout the year for most chapters. To find out about activities occurring during informal recruitment, please fill out a Fraternity and Sorority Interest Form and chapters will make contact with interested individuals about upcoming events..
Multicultural Greek Council (MGC)
is the governing body for six nationally recognized sororities on campus. Organizations include: Delta Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., Gamma Sigma Sigma National Service Sorority, Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc., Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc., Sigma Sigma Rho Sorority Inc., and Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. Chapters in this council are culturally based but are not culturally exclusive in membership. Each individual sorority conducts membership intake at various times throughout the year. Information is generally provided through fliers and campus marketing at least two weeks prior to any informational sessions. Stop by
the Office of Student Life and Leadership or visit the website to complete a Greek Interest form. Forms will be forwarded to the chapters to allow them to make contact with interested individuals regarding intake guidelines and upcoming activities or events.
