Overview
Student media at Georgia State exist to provide students with journalistic
learning opportunities in a variety of mediums and to provide forums for
student expression. Participating students make important decisions about
the management of these organizations and are responsible for the day-to-day
operation of the student media.
The governing body for student media is the Committee on Student
Communications (CSC). The CSC meets for regular business each month and at
other times for special purposes. Copies of the committee bylaws are available
in Student Activities. In spring semester, the CSC solicits applications for the
following student media positions: general manager, GSTV; editor, The Signal;
editor, New South; and general manager, WRAS-Atlanta.

Georgia State University Television is the student-run television station of Georgia
State. GSTV can be seen in the University Commons and The Lofts on channels
74 and 75. Programming consists of Georgia State productions, music videos,
documentaries, public domain and syndicated programming.
GSTV allows students to become involved in every aspect of television
broadcasting. Throughout each semester, GSTV offers hands-on videography and
editing opportunities. After successfully completing training to be a staff volunteer,
students can participate in existing programs or produce their own television
shows. Some of GSTV’s past award-winning shows include GSTV News; Lounge
88; Georgia State basketball; and music, sports and interview productions.
GSTV also provides content to PeopleTV, which is available to Atlanta Comcast
subscribers.

New South, the University’s student-run literary magazine, serves to showcase
the literary and artistic talent of established and emerging writers from around
the world, while offering students an opportunity to gain valuable experience in
editing and publishing.
New South also hosts writing workshops and readings throughout the year
featuring outstanding undergraduate and graduate students from the Georgia State
English department.

The Signal and Urbanite, the student newspapers of Georgia State, provide
students with an excellent learning workshop for journalistic, marketing, business,
photographic and communications skills.
The Signal is published each Tuesday during academic semesters and can be
found in more than 50 locations on campus. The Urbanite is released monthly.
The Signal covers campus news, opinions, features on student life and Georgia
State sports events. The Urbanite publishes arts and entertainment news on
music, film and fashion. Journalism experience is not required, and all students
are welcome to be trained in basic news, features and sports writing, as well as
advertisement sales and newspaper layout and production.

Georgia State has held a license for a noncommercial radio station since 1970.
Through the ‘ and the Committee on Student Communications, the operation
of the station has been placed in the hands of Georgia State University students.
The general manager is the chief officer of the station and is responsible to the
Committee on Student Communications for all programming and for ensuring
that all Federal Communications Commission regulations are strictly followed.
WRAS offers diverse new music and music from local bands, as well as news,
Georgia State Panthers basketball and select baseball games, interviews, public
service programming and announcements. The WRAS rotation features a mix
of indie pop/rock, urban and techno music, with additional specialty programs
featuring reggae, big band, classical and more. Students are encouraged to apply
to become WRAS DJs or for positions in the sports or news departments. WRAS
was selected Best Overall Radio Station in Atlanta by both the staff and readers of
Creative Loafing in 2008.
