Choral & Instrumental Ensembles
Auditions
Instrumental and choral pool auditions are held for music majors and other interested students at the start of each semester. For additional information, please contact the School of Music after July 15 th.
Choral Ensembles

- University Singers – an acclaimed ensemble of 72 mixed voices. The Singers tour throughout Georgia and have made six international tours.
- University Choral Society – composed of Georgia State University students, faculty and staff.
- Women’s Chorus – committed to exploring traditional and contemporary repertoire for treble voices.
- Vocal Jazz Ensemble – a group of musicians that perform jazz vocal literature.
Orchestra

- University Symphony Orchestra – an ensemble of 80 graduate and undergraduate student players, presenting six to eight performances each academic year.
- The Orchestra collaborates regularly with distinguished guest artists, Georgia State University music faculty and university choral ensembles.
Bands

- Symphonic Wind Ensemble – composed of the finest woodwind, brass and percussion students from the School of Music . The ensemble performs four concerts each year, and regularly features outstanding guest composers, conductors and soloists. This is an auditioned ensemble.
- Wind Orchestra - composed of instrumentalists from the School of Music and the University at large. The ensemble typically performs two concerts per year and features guest soloists. This is a nonauditioned ensemble for any student with previous instrumental experience.
- Panther Basketball Band – performs at men’s and women’s home basketball games and tournament appearances.This is an auditioned ensemble.
Brass Ensemble

- University Brass Ensemble – composed of brass and percussion students, with smaller chamber groups selected from the large ensemble.
- Each year, the Ensemble hosts BrassFest, a weekend of brass music, guest artists and master classes.
Percussion Ensemble

- University Percussion Ensemble – performs a wide range of eclectic music, all of which exhibits the influences of popular, folk music and traditional percussion writing.
Jazz Ensembles

- Jazz Bands and Combos are open to all Georgia State University students regardless of class standing or area of study, offering them the opportunity to perform in jazz groups of recognized excellence.
Musicians of all levels are encouraged to participate and are placed in groups according to their level of ability and experience. The jazz ensembles strive to instill an understanding and appreciation of jazz,
and with guidance, offer an opportunity for the musician to explore new modes of self-expression.
New Music Ensemble

- neoPhonia New Music Ensemble – a chamber ensemble promoting the music of contemporary composers, chamber works of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and works by emerging young composers.
Opera

- University Opera Theater Workshop – provides opportunities for students to learn and practice skills related to operatic performance from the standard repertoire and contemporary works, culminating in performances of operatic scenes and/or full productions.
- Harrower Summer Opera Workshop – a nationally recognized three-week workshop featuring a staff of professional coaches and stage directors and culminating in performances of operatic scenes and/or operas.
Music Classes for Non-Majors
- The School of Music offers a variety of classes for non-music majors, including core classes in classical, jazz and world music (Areas B and C); popular music; guitar; piano; and voice. Additional classes are available on a case-by-case basis to qualified students. Available courses are listed under the MUA prefix in each semester’s schedule of classes.
