Overview

The Department of Student Health Promotion envisions a healthy Georgia State in which students are empowered to, and reinforced for, making choices that improve the health of individuals and the campus community. The mission of Student Health Promotion is to provide (and support) health promotion activities, programs, services and policies that empower Georgia State students to make informed, healthier choices and engage in harm reduction/disease prevention strategies.

DSHP provides wellness education in fun and interactive forms, aids in connecting students with resources to gain knowledge, and offers opportunities for peer-to-peer education. The department promotes and encourages selfresponsibility, conscious decisions and informed choices in relation to health. The wellness library features health-related books, videos, brochures, posters and other materials, which are available to students. Groups and individuals are encouraged to stop by the office to learn more about promoting a healthier Georgia State.

Peer Health Educators provide a key leadership role in creating a healthy
campus. DSHP uses trained graduate and undergraduate peer educators called PHEs — Peer Health Educators. PHEs have received specialized training in public health initiatives, health promotion programming and dimensions of wellness, and they provide many of the department’s services. PHEs are the University’s first-response to health promotion and wellness education.
