Insurance Provided by Student Activity Fee
To alleviate hardship resulting from on-campus activities and accidents to student participants in activities sponsored, approved or conducted by the University, insurance coverage has been provided for all registered student activity participants who have paid the student activity fee. The insurance provides both an accidental death and dismemberment benefit and a supplemental medical expense reimbursement for any charges incurred as a direct result of an incident occurring on campus or in an approved and sponsored activity. The policy has specific limitations with respect to notice of claim, proof of loss and payment of claim.
A copy of the policy is available in the Department of Safety and Risk Management and may be reviewed by any student during normal office hours. This coverage is provided under a group policy at favorable rates due to the large number of students covered, with the premiums paid from the student activity fee. This program is administered by the University. All incidents should be reported to the particular activity leader, who will assist the student in reporting the incident and taking appropriate action with respect to any expenses incurred.
Each student wishing to participate in University-sponsored activities is expected to participate only in those activities that are approved and/or conducted by the University. Despite the most careful precautions, some accidents will occur, causing individual hardship on the victim and those responsible for the student’s well-being.
Before deciding to participate in a University-sponsored activity, the student must assume personal responsibility that all of the conditions below are met.
The student must ascertain what is involved in each activity in which he or she proposes to participate, including the individual risks implicit in participation. For questions concerning an activity and the student’s ability to participate in it safely, review such matters with the activity leader before deciding to participate. Then, having sufficient knowledge to make a decision about participating, each student is expected to observe the rules of behavior associated with the activity and is presumed, personally, to have assumed all risks reasonably associated with participation, including that of any random or imprudent action.
As one condition of registration, each student affirms that he or she recognizes and agrees as follows:
1. He or she has knowledge of the terms and conditions of this insurance program.
2. He or she will attempt to ensure that each activity in which he or she participates will be qualified for coverage.
3. In the consideration of the insurance made available, unless there is clear evidence of gross negligence or error or omission in the instructional program or supervision accompanying the program, he or she waives any right of action against any employee of the institution, the institution and/or the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.
Activity leaders have specific information concerning this insurance coverage and its application and will share it with any student requesting such information.
