Application of Technology in Middle School / High School Health and Physical Education

 

 

Course Title/Term Taught: 

            SHAZAM!!! Putting a Kick in "tired" and "worn-out" middle and high school health/physical  education activities - Fall, 2000

 

Description:

            This on-line course is designed to help you add "new life" to "worn-out" activities. You will learn how to energize and individualize health and physical education experiences by creatively engaging and empowering students in web connections of discovery.

            The course:

               1. integrates the National and International Standards for Technology Education;

               2. promotes application and reflection specific to selected technology strategies; and

               3. emphasizes the importance of assistive technologies in reaching all students.

 

Major Purposes:

            To expose participants to a variety of interactive technologies (professional web sites; worldwide, filtered and translated e-mail; web questing; on-line teacher-student-parent communication; storyboarding; and discussion boards) which are then integrated into existing learning activities. Participants will reflect on the effectiveness of these applied strategies within their student populations.

 

Hours/Credits:

            The course will provide fifty (50) contact hours of instruction and five (5) staff development units. Class members will be required to attend a two hour orientation session, Wednesday, September 20,2000, 5-7 p.m.; a two hour training workshop, Wednesday, October 25, 2000, 5-7 p.m., Instructional Technology Center, Second Floor, College of Education Building, Georgia State University; and a two hour final presentation session, Wednesday, November 29, 2000. Class participants will spend approximately thirty-two (32) hours interacting on-line and twelve (12) hours applying eight technology strategies to one of their classes.

            Competencies to be Demonstrated:

 

National and International Standards for Technology:

           

              1.Designing Learning Experiences: Participants develop learning activities which utilize
                multiple  computer environments; participants align technology use with subject area
                content and grade level standards.

             

              2.Teaching and Learning/Curriculum and Instruction: Participants arrange access to
                 technology resources that allow students to successfully engage in learning activities;
                 Participants implement technology appropriate for student activities involving research,
                 data gathering, and analysis, and simulations; Participants demonstrate the ability to use 
                 a variety of instructional technology strategies (teacher led, collaborative, 
                 individualized, and learner centered).

             

              3.Assessment:Participants demonstrate the ability to use a variety of technology-based                   assessment tools (risk assessment, personal health and activity profiles).

             

              4.Safe and Responsible Use/Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Issues: Participants will
                 comply with copyright policy for educators and will comply with legal and professional
                 responsibilities for students needing adaptive and assistive technologies (as assessed
                 through a simulation activity).

             

              5.Professional Practice: Participants will actively engage in technology-based 
                 communication and collaboration with classmates through e-mail and discussion
                 board activities in order to create and publish an assigned web quest activity.

 

Course Requirements:

 

            Each class member will:

 

              1.Actively participate in class and in on-line activities (implement seven technology
                 strategies, post seven reflections on these applications, one each week on
                 designated dates);

 

              2.Attend all three in class sessions, September 20, October 25, and November 29,2000; 
                       

              3.Create,post,and present a health/physical education web quest (small group activity).

 

Mastery Verification:

 

            Class members must demonstrate mastery of course competencies as illustrated in the completion of technology application assignments, discussion board posting of reflections, and final presentation of a health/physical education web quest. The instructor will sign off on the Attendance Record and Mastery Verification Report for all students meeting this criteria.

 

Course Evaluation:

 

            Class members will evaluate the course with the Cobb County Staff Development Course Evaluation Form and with other measures developed by the instructor.
