Finding Physical, Mental, and Social Health
 
Introduction:
The parents of adolescent x are at their wits ends!!!!!  They fear for the well being
of their child .  Fortunately, money is no object for the X's. They have hired the best money can buy!!!  This prestigious panel of experts will assess the needs of their child and come up with realistic solutions.  Good luck!!!!

The Task:
1.  There should be three people on your panel.
2.  Appoint each to be either a physical educator, a nutritionist, or a  physician.
3.  As a group, you will read and analyze the file on adolescent x.
4.  After reading the file , group members will work individually to do research.
5.  The purpose of your elite panel is to compile a compelling case to promote the
     emotional, physical, and mental well-being of adolescent x.

Roles and Perspectives:
To learn how emotional, physical, and mental well being are inter-related,
each person will assume the role of:
. a physical educator
. a nutritionist
. a physician
You and the other committee members will each choose a role.  Each member will explore the background information and move on to their specific role.  From this research you will draft a recommendation based on information gleaned from the relevant sites.  Each of you will bring your written recommendation to the panel for discussion.  The panel will then arrange the information in a final form for the parent's of adolescence x.

Since your panel is representing the parents of adolescence x, keep in mind the results will be given directly to the patient!!!  The presentation should be completed on power point or posted as a Web page.  Remember adolescent x is very intelligent and he enjoys interacting with the computer, use this to your advantage.

Adolescent X's File:
    Adolescent x is a 13 year old male. He is 5'2 and weighs 145 lb..  He spends most of his time on the computer.  He does not have much of a social life.  He feels  that he is too smart to hang out with people his age.  He has become listless and apathetic.  Sleeping 10-12 hours a night.   His diet consist of  fast food, processed food and sodas.  Adolescent x does not exercise.  He feels that the physical education program at his school is boring.  Adolescent x scored very high on the standardized test scores; however, his grades are slipping.  He has always been an A or B student, but recently his grades have slipped to C's and D's.

Goal:  
The goal of your panel is to come up with a comprehensive program for adolescent x's  well being. This program will realize the importance of the  physical, social  and mental well being inter-related.   Keep in mind the program that you come up with must be of interest to him.  Using web sites you have visited, get ideas as to how to best approach adolescent x.

Role information:
Physical Educator
    As the Physical Educator your task is to put spice back into the physical fitness activities for adolescent x.  Specifically, you will have
these task to complete.
1.  Create an interactive activity for adolescent x to assess his current physical
    fitness level. Frequency, intensity, and duration must be included in the activity.
2.  Create a physical fitness lesson plan that would interest adolescent x.
    The lesson plan will include a fun warm-up activity, an activity, and a conclusion.
3.  Create an interactive activity from the internet that would compel
     adolescent x to be active.
4.  Describe how adolescent x's physical, mental, and social health are connected;  in
     addition, why is it important for each element to be balanced?

Nutritionist
     As the nutritionist, your responsibility is to educate adolescent x on the
importance of nutrition.
1.   Create an interactive activity that will review the food groups with adolescent x.
2.  Create an interactive activity to help adolescent x understand the importance of 
     healthy eating.
3.  Create a menu for one day that would get adolescent off to a good start (include
    the web site for adolescent x to refer back to).
4.  Describe how adolescent x's physical, mental and social health are connected; in
     addition, why is it important for each element to be balanced?

Physician
   As the Physician, you are concerned with the adolescent x's lifestyle and the effects on his health.
1.  Create an interactive activity that allows adolescent x to asses his current Body
    Mass Index.
2.  Create an interactive activity that will explain to adolescent x the importance of
    living a healthy lifestyle.
3.  Create an integrative activity that will explain to adolescent x the importance of
    the mental, physical and social health.
4. Describe how adolescent x's physical, mental, and social health are connected;  in
    addition, why is it important for each element to be balanced?

Evaluation:
.  You will receive an individual grade based on the role position you developed.  A
   written copy will be handed in.
.  A group grade will be given on how well you work as a group.
.  The two grades will be averaged for a final Web Quest Grade.
.  The group grade will be a media presentation to the parents and adolescent x.  A
   written copy is to be handed in.

Conclusion:
After completing this Web Quest the members of your group will have:
.  An understanding of how physical, mental, and social health inter-relate.
.  A view of the importance of each component.
.  Collaborated as a team to deliver the final results.
.  The ability to extract appropriate information from a multitude of sites.
.  A working knowledge of the internet and the use of links.
