Prof. Melanie Davenport creates animated shorts illustrating stories of the Wixarika youth in their own language
Associate Professor of Art Education, Melanie Davenport, an affiliate of the Center for Latin American and Latino Studies at GSU, has worked with indigenous Wixarika (Huichol) youth in central Mexico to create animated shorts illustrating their own stories in their own language. One of these, "Yuimakwara" (the Drum Celebration) will be shown in two film festivals at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian in New York this spring. Partial support for this project came from a grant from the CLALS.
"The Drum Celebration," other shorts, and more information about this project can be viewed at: http://teachanimation.org/estipacmenu.html, a website created and maintained by Davenport's collaborator, Karin Gunn.
