DATES: May 11- June 3, 2009

PRICE: $2,000

Application DeadlineMarch 13 , 2009

This is a three-week Maymester course in the cities of Antigua and Guatemala City, Guatemala. The objective is to study Latin American intercultural
communication and provide an opportunity for formal study and immersion in Spanish language.
Guatemala is an ideal location for such study because there were special provisions for intercultural communication in the Guatemalan peace process that started in 1996 and continue today. Among the themes studied include: educational reform for intercultural communication; multicultural advertising; and how the peace accords have intended to achieve reconciliation in Guatemala via specific reforms and innovations in the country’s mass media system (e.g. training of indigenous journalists, and promoting the use of indigenous languages in the media). Students will be provided with opportunities to learn more about this central theme of the course via field trips to Guatemalan media houses, research assignments in Guatemalan libraries, and visiting
lectures by Guatemalan journalists, activists, scholars, politicians, government officials, and representatives of international organizations working to advance the peace process in Guatemala.
