Ms. Fertelmeyster serves as a Director of Cultural Competency Programs for Jewish Child and Family Services of Chicago. Ms. Fertelmeyster oversees the Illinois Refugee Family Strengthening Project, which was featured as a best practice site in the Administration for Children and Families’ “Building Strong Families” publication. Ms. Fertelmeyster maintains her private practice as a cultural diversity/intercultural communications consultant.

The Healthy Families program provides the training and support necessary to foster healthy marriages in refugee families through training models that preserve their cultural identity. ASSISTING REFUGEE FAMILIES IN THEIR SEARCH FOR NEW IDENTITY OBJECTIVES

1. To examine family relationships as cultural phenomena
2. To understand the role of cultural transitions in the development of family system
3. To develop a cultural perspective on conflict and conflict resolution
4. To learn how to include cultural components in designing and leading a successful educational event
5. To understand the role of language in providing family life education to refugees
6. To be aware of the advantages and limitations of using existing models of marital and parenting education
