Human Races
An Exploration the Impact of Race in Our Lives

Living in this world means, more than ever, to live with a great deal of diversity.  This is also true on our campus.   Our diversity has enriched the experiences of the entire campus community through  variedbd19728_.wmf (17938 bytes) perspectives on what being a citizen of the world means.

However, the strength of the campus' overall diversity may not be enough to shield individual students from the challenges that come from living in such a multicultural environment. Whether or not you currently identify yourself in terms of race, culture, or nationality, the fact that others may do so can still impact your experience. This is especially true if they react to you without awareness and sensitivity to your own sense of how much race matters in your life. We, at The Counseling Center, are sensitive to these challenges and are available to help you sort out and explore the degree to which your own sense of who you are as an individual is impacted by who you are as a member of a racial group, ethnic identity, and/or nationality.

bd19628_.wmf (38518 bytes)As we move further into the new millennium, we become more and more aware of the significant issues facing the world... and our own communities. Regardless of who we are, one issue we all have in common is learning to live in a world, society, and community that involves the benefits and challenges of diversity. By examining recent history and current events in the world, it is clear that race and cultural identity are among the most critical aspects of diversity warranting acknowledgement and active attention.

There is no way to fully address the issue of race for the great diversity here  within a single web page. Nor is it possible to fully identify all the different racial and cultural identities. Our goal is to acknowledge that challenges posed by such diversity can be difficult. Whether you are White/ European-American, African-American, Asian-American, Latino, Native-American, an international student, or the child of parents from different racial groups, we at [the Counseling Center believe race and ethnicity impact your life as an individual. We recognize the many ways in which your racial and cultural identity enhances your perspective, and we understand that race may also effect you in ways that are often painful and alienating. We are here to help you grow as a member of a diverse community and are available for support when it's hard to find others who know where you're coming from. Don't hesitate to call. We believe diversity matters, and we believe you do, too.
