Sometimes I wish I wasn’t part of this Hispanic or Latino group. I’m not ashamed. In fact, my parents raised me to be very proud of our culture, but it’s so exhausting sometimes to fight the stereotypes. It’s like, “Helloooooo, just because we are from Columbia does not mean we’re drug dealers!” A friend of mine from Mexico, the part of Mexico that exists within the so-called legal U.S. borders, has to constantly assert that he is not an “illegal alien.” Besides, the real illegal aliens are the people in the Southwest who forget that the U.S. government moved the Mexican border and didn’t say “thank you” or “Please” before they did so and declared Mexicans as “illegal aliens.” |
