I am not a trendy culture that can be borrowed! Nothing makes me angrier than to see a White person, with the blondest hair and the fairest skin, calling himself Indian. It’s trendy, and because there’s some tiny drop of Indian blood, they claim to be what I am. I get so depressed sometimes, with an anger that is hard to shake, because my being Indian still costs me a lot in this country, and I still see the most severe poverty in this country suffered by Indians and this is painful for me. This is my Indian-ness, and when I see somebody claiming to be what this is, without any pain of what it really does mean to be Indian, I feel like another slaughter has taken place. First our lands, then our identities. |
