Facts on Student Mandatory Fees at Georgia State University

• The Student Activity Fee is distributed by a committee of seven students and three faculty/staff, and is allocated to over 150 student organizations. These funds provide a range of direct student services. Student organizations that receive these dollars are chartered through the Student Activities Office and provide services ranging from speakers and films, student media, and diversity programs. In addit ion, various student groups are supported whose activities are related to their specific degree program.

• The Athletic Fee is used to support varsity intercollegiate athletics. This fee is used for athletic scholarships and other costs associated with competitive athletics. The athletic fee allows students to use their Panther Card for free access to athletic events.
  

• The Transportation Fee is used to help fund the cost of operating the shuttle service (which transports students to campus from Turner Field), and the cost of leasing over 1,000 parking spaces at Turner Field. Additionally, the transportation fee provides for a significant discount on the purchase of monthly MARTA Breezecards.

• The Health Fee is necessary to provide the necessary health care required for our student population. Students may visit the health clinic to receive on-going medical consultations and receive prescriptions via appointments or through the urgent sick visit process. This fee allows for the needed equipment and personnel to provide these services.

• The Student Recreation Center has become one of the top University facilities in the southeast and has won national recognition. Over two million entries have been recorded with an average of 1,200 per day (7 days a week) utilizing a variety of programs. The Recreation Bond fee pays back the cost to construct the facility and the Recreation Programming fee allows the department to offer services for little or no cost to students.

• The Student Center Fee provides funding support for the operation and long term repair and replacement of the Student Center and the University Center, including the annual bond payment for construction of the Student Center facility. The Student/University Center serves as the community center for the campus community providing meeting and event space, lounge and study space, and student services offices. The Student/University Center hosts over 5,000 events per year and averages over 15,000 patrons in the Center daily.

• A Library Fee was instituted in 2004 for major improvements to the Library. Renovations are being made to serve the growing student body and provide services in demand by students. Improvements include expansion of group study rooms, an expanded bridge with more workspace, advanced technology, an enhanced special collections section, and areas to encourage collaborative learning and instruction.

• The International Education Fee supports Study Abroad by providing scholarships for students to study overseas, and provides for compliance with the federally mandated Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, known as SEVIS.

• The Technology Fee is used primarily to benefit students to assist them in meeting the educational objectives of their academic program by providing access to computers, software, databases, networks and other services.

• Tuition is used to cover the academic costs of your education. It is used in combination with state appropriations and donations to fund classroom instruction, academic facilities, and faculty and staff salaries. Unfortunately, costs do rise. However, GSU’s tuition continues to be lower than that at most large southeastern universities, and the percentage of increase has been kept lower than many similar institutions.

• No fee dollars are used to operate fraternities and sororities. These are private organizations that operate through membership dues and alumni contributions.

• Clearly, in order to keep fees reasonable, many students subsidize services that they do not use. It is the intention of the university that the comprehensiveness of the services and programs provided will offer something for everybody.
