Complaint:

The formal complaint from Georgia State University alleged that members of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity required pledges to participate in such actions or situations including, but not limited to the following: an activity called “antiquing”, which is covering pledges with eggs and then flour.

Alleged Violations of Georgia State University's Student Code of Conduct Section III General Conduct Policies and Procedures, Subsection A. Prohibited General Conduct :

Number 5. Verbally threatening, physically abusing, or threatening physical abuse, intimidation, coercion and/or conduct which threatens or endangers the health or safety of self, other students, other members of the University community or campus visitors.

Number 6 . Attempted theft of and/or damage to property belonging to the University, any member or the University community or any visitor to the University.

Number 15 . Engaging in, supporting, promoting or sponsoring hazing.

Results:

The Student Judicial Board held a disciplinary hearing on Friday, November 10, 2006.

Based upon the information and evidence presented at the judicial hearing, the Student Judicial Board found Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity responsible for violations of Section III(a)5, Section III(a)6 and Section III(a)15 of Georgia State University Student Code of Conduct. The Dean of Students upheld the finding of the Student Judicial Board and the recommended sanctions as indicated below:

  1. Written Reprimand : The sanction letter serves as a written reprimand that Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity violated the Student Code of Conduct and notice that continuation or repetition of Code violations may result in more severe action.
  2. Restriction : Effective immediately and to conclude Saturday, May 10, 2008, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity's advisor must be present for each recruitment activity. This includes every meeting and retreat in which pledges will participate or will be present.
  3. Education Sanction : Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity must organize and present a program on hazing prevention during the 2007 Hazing Prevention Week. The Student Judicial Board must be notified of the time and location the program before it occurs.
  4. Restitution : Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity must pay the cost for replacement of the tent.
