Presbyterian Church
From 8 to 10 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Eatonton Presbyterian Church and reception hosted by the People's Bank.

ballReadings from the works of Joel Chandler Harris, Alice Walker, and Flannery O'Connor will kick off this year's Festival. The readings will feature humorous selections and other works designed to entertain a general audience.
  • Harris's "Wonderful Tar-Baby Story" will be read by Norma Watterson, curator of the Uncle Remus Museum.
  • O'Connor's "Good Country People" will be read by Beth Sumner, Joe DeLoach and Craig Amason.
    Beth Sumner teaches English at Putnam County High School, Joe DeLoach currently teaches at Gatewood School, and Craig Amason is the director of the new Flannery O'Connor Foundation.
  • Walker's poems "Burial" and "Revolutionary Petunias" will be read by Chrispenese Miles, a recent graduate of Putnam County High School.
ballCaroline Lundy, a retired educator, will read from the poetry of Mirabeau Lamar, a native of Eatonton. Lamar moved to Texas in the late 1820s but wrote love poems "back home to the girls." Lamar would gain fame as the first president of the Republic of Texas.
