| This painting was done originally as a gift for Ruth
Walker Hood, sister to Alice Walker, by artist Travis
Hicks, who grew up only a mile down Ward's Chapel
Road from the church and from the Walker homeplace.
The original was executed in watercolor on
paper and was completed in May of 2000. The painting
depicts the church as it appears today from the cemetery
across Ward's Chapel Road. Prints from the painting will
be available in late July at a cost of $35 each, and a portion
of the sales of these prints will go to the Eatonton Literary
Festival. Prints will also be available during the 2000 Eatonton
Literary Festival to be held August 4th and 5th. "I painted this as a personal gift for Ruth Walker Hood. She has been very supportive of my work in the past, having commissioned me for two paintings of the Walker homeplace and having bought another painting of a window from Ward Chapel Church. When she got the painting of the window, she said, 'Oh, I wish that you had painted the whole church.' Well, I finally got around to it...only about five years later than I originally planned." - Travis Hicks |
