Regulators
and administrators continually struggle with the sometimes
opposing needs of economic development and the environment.
These struggles are manifest in the areas of water scarcity,
air and water quality, and natural resource conservation
as related to land-use, transportation and agricultural
policies. These programs will provide students with
a background in legal, economic and social policy tools
that may be used to manage these competing demands on
the environment. The courses are designed to cover a
broad array of environmental applications, and as such,
students with specific interests (such as water management,
land-use or transportation management) are encouraged
to work with faculty advisors to tailor the program
to meet their needs.
The
programs will serve two main groups of professionals:
those currently working on environmental issues within
government agencies, non-profit organizations and the
private sector, and those wishing to enter in to environmental
management. The programs are designed to appeal to professionals
with primarily technical, scientific backgrounds or
those with management backgrounds who wish to expand
their skills with knowledge of the relevant legal, economic
and institutional issues necessary to be a effective
decision maker in the policy-arena.
