Research Tools & Clearinghouse Sites


These sites that are listed here provide links to sites that have collected information about various reference tools. The sites themselves do not contain information about English or the teaching of ESL/EFL but point to other locations that do have information of use for ESL/EFL teachers and students.


The Librarians' List of Online Resources--a huge system maintained by the library at the University of California-Berkeley

Information on Using the APA Formatting System from the Writing Lab at Purdue.

ERIC: Check the Databases on Galileo in the Education subsection.

American Psychological Association (APA) update to their Publication Manual with information on giving  references for materials found on the WWW.

Dictionary List Compiled by the Writing Center at the University of Texas-Austin: Use a list prepared for  undergraduate writers at the University of Texas.

ERIC. Use ASK ERIC to access the database of the Educational Resources Clearinghouse for materials       published since 1991.

Foreign Language Resources on the Web. This resource list points to foreign language and culture specific sites on the WWW.

FLTEACH is the Foreign Language Teaching Forum's location for information and discussion on methods and materials.

Fulbright information from CIES (the Council for the Internationaal Exchange of Scholars). The site gives information about Fulbright opportunities--ESL/EFL teachers should pay special attention to the "junior lectureships" for teaching and doing teacher training overseas. The site also lists the Fulbright scholars from overseas who are in the United States in the current year; CIES will pay transportation for scholars on the list to visit other U.S. colleges and universities to do lectures and give presentations--the local institution must pay for local costs (housing, food, and local transportation).

Galileo, Georgia Library Learning Online. This system provides WWW access to research tools such as Dissertation Abstracts and information sources such as the Encyclopedia Britannica. Some materials are open to everyone; some require a password and are limited to students and university employees. If you are working from GSU or a member library, you have direct access. If you are working from home, you will need a password that is available at the Reference Desk at the Pullen Library.

LINGUIST is an electronic network maintained at Texas A & M and Eastern Michigan Universities. LINGUIST serves as a research and discussion facilityfor the linguistic academic community through an electronic mailing list and its World Wide Web sites.

GIL--This system gives access to the library at Georgia State University.

The U.S. Library of Congress: This site gives access to the ever-expanding on-line resources of the U.S.        Library of Congress.

Yahoo's Links to Dictionaries: Find Additional Resources.

Yahoo's Links to Encyclopedias: Many of these require subscription for use; other are being written by        volunteers and must be used with care.
