Budding musicians perform at Rialto’s Jazz for Kids Jazzfest

Young jazz musicians from Atlanta middle schools perform during the Rialto’s Jazz for Kids Jazzfest.

ATLANTA –The next generation of Atlanta’s jazz musicians made their debut at the Rialto Jazz for Kids Jazzfest May 5 at the Rialto Center for the Arts.

Middle-school students from metro Atlanta collaborated with professional jazz musicians throughout the school year in preparation for the concert. The Rialto Jazz for Kids program, led by Gordon Vernick, head of Georgia State University’s Jazz Studies, also provides students with written educational materials, lesson plans and post-visit activities.

“I love working with kids, with my horn in one hand and my recordings over here, trying to put this whole thing together so they understand the music,” said Vernick.

Student musicians from Inman Middle School, Ridgeview Middle School, Sandtown Middle School, J.C. Young Middle School, Taylor Road Middle School and the Rialto All-Star Jazz Band participated in this year’s program.
