March 24, 2008 Liz Babiarz, 404-413-1356 Elie Wiesel to speak at Georgia State conference ATLANTA – Holocaust survivor, author and Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel will speak at a Georgia State conference at 6 p.m. Thursday (March 27) on the topic, “Building a Moral Society: the Urgency of Hope.” Wiesel, an Andrew W. Mellon Professor at Boston University, is a survivor of the Nazi death camps at Auschwitz and Buchenwald during WWII. The experience led him to use his talents as an author and teacher to defend human rights and advocate peace throughout the world. Wiesel has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. Wiesel’s talk is the highlight of Georgia State’s third bi-annual Cultural Competency Conference, held Thursday (March 27) and Friday (March 28). Themed “Navigating the Complexities of Multiple Identities: Multicultural Skills for Life,” the conference will focus on racial identity skills, lesbian, gay and bisexual health issues, refugee families searching for a new identity and ethnocultural diversity, among other topics. Tickets to “An Evening with Professor Elie Wiesel” are free for Georgia State students with a valid student ID and $10 for Georgia State faculty and staff. The general public may purchase tickets for $35 by coming to the Rialto Box Office or by calling (404) 413-9TIX. The evening with Wiesel will be held in the Georgia State Sports Arena, 125 Decatur St. The cost to attend the conference is $170 per day for faculty, staff and the public and $60 for students.
