University Relations Tip Sheet - May 22, 2007

Planning is key to summer fun
As the school year comes to a close, parents need to sit down with their kids and make a plan for the summer, says John Kesner, an expert in childhood development and director of the College of Education's Saturday School for Scholars and Leaders. "This plan should include some things that the child wants to do and some that the parents want the child to do," Kesner says. "Parents shouldn't wait until summer to make this plan as many activities get filled to capacity months before summer." While there's no rule of thumb about whether it's best for a child to spend the summer engaged in solely academic or social activities, Kesner advises parents to ensure that the child enjoys and actually wants to do whatever activities are chosen. Parents should also try to encourage their children to explore new interests, he says. For other tips for parents, contact Kesner at 404-651-2584 or ecejek@langate.gsu.edu. The million dollar question: Does Atlanta need second airport?
Federal officials have begun to seek the answer with a $1 million grant that will study whether Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport should be expanded, or whether another airport in Atlanta is necessary to keep pace with commercial air traffic. Andrew Young School of Policy Studies Associate Professor of Economics Bruce Seaman has conducted several economic studies centered on Hartsfield-Jackson, and its addition of a fifth runway. To speak with Seaman about the economic impact of commercial aviation in Georgia, please contact Michael Wall at 404-651-3572 or mtwall@gsu.edu.

The economy - what's really going on?
Gas prices are climbing at record rates, Delta Air Lines has re-emerged from bankruptcy, and Atlanta's economic engine, its housing market, continues to slumber. Only one man can connect the dots and explain these complex economic issues in a plain and sometimes humorous way that any one can understand. Rajeev Dhawan, director of the J. Mack Robinson College of Business Economic Forecasting Center, will present his latest forecast of the nation, state and the region from 8 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Wednesday (May 23) in the Speakers Auditorium of Georgia State University Student Center, 44 Courtland Street. Dhawan will be joined by Mike Alexander, Atlanta Regional Commission chief of research, Karsten Jeske, and economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, and several other leaders in the business community. For more information, visit http://robinson.gsu.edu/efc/index.html, or contact the Economic Forecasting Center at 404-651-3298 or efc@gsu.edu.
