A host of artists from across the globe will be coming to Georgia State in April to share their experiences with students, faculty and the Atlanta community thanks to the university’s Center for Collaborative and International Arts (CENCIA), which brings together artists from various disciplines to build partnerships in arts-related scholarship at the university. “This is part of a mission to bring international artists and writers to Georgia State and have an exchange of ideas,” said Megan Sexton, managing editor of Georgia State University’s Five Points literary magazine. “Sometimes you can find more connection with somebody who is working in another country, and we hope we can bring that to our students.” Upcoming events include a reading from Irish poet Vona Groarke, an exhibition and reception with Zapotec weaver Demetrio Lazo and a performance of “Matchbook,” a sonnet sequence set to music. Researcher investigates link between folic acid and heart health, anemia A Georgia State University researcher and colleagues are investigating the effects of a decade-long requirement to fortify all cereals in the United States with folic acid, and its link with a chemical believed to play a role in cardiovascular disease. Vijay Ganji, associate professor of nutrition in Georgia State’s College of Health and Human Sciences, and Mohammad R. Kafai, of San Francisco State University, investigated multiple factors involved in the levels of the nutrient folic acid and homocysteine - for which studies suggest a link to increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Their recent report examines an unintended effect of folic acid fortification -- the reduction of homocysteine, but also an increase in a chemical which can indicate vitamin B12 deficiency.
