College of Arts and
Sciences
An exhibition, “Losing Yourself in the 21st Century,” sponsored by the university’s Center for International and Collaborative Arts (CENCIA), running through Nov. 19, showcases performative media by emerging, U.S.-based women artists who are exploring issues of identity and subjectivity in the contemporary age. The exhibition is on display in the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design Gallery, located at 10 Peachtree Center Ave. in downtown Atlanta. For the exhibition, women artists from across the United States were invited to submit postings that engage the theme of “loss of self” from any perspective, especially those that address the intersection of new media technologies.
College of
Education
The COE Alumni Club is partnering with Project One-on-One: An Academic Mentoring Program. Project One-on-One is the Alumni Club's service organization. All of the club's efforts are linked to its vision: "Every child deserves an education... the children of the College of Education.:" The Children's Restoration Network created the Project One-on-One academic mentoring pogram to help homeless children develop the academic skills necessary to thrive in school. The program seeks to provide an academic mentor for each homeless child at 19 different group homes and emergency shelters in the Metro-Atlanta area. Mentors are needed to help kids (ages 5-18) improve their reading and math skills. Please consider volunteering your time to this program and supporting the club's mission of Moving Lives Forward through service. To volunteer, contact Ben Minor at 770-649-7117 or etate2@gsu.edu. College of Health and Human
Sciences
The Center for Leadership in Disability (CLD) at Georgia State University has been awarded a three-year, $675,000 grant to develop a joint program on developmental disabilities with the Satcher Health Leadership Institute (SHLI) at Morehouse School of Medicine. Funding will come from the Administration on Developmental Disabilities of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The disability partnership will serve as a vehicle for exchanging ideas and innovation in research, training and services between the faculty, staff, and students of the two institutions, with the goal of reducing disparities in health and well-being related to disability and minority status in Georgia. The grant builds on CLD’s designation as a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, and its mission to translate research into sustainable community practices that support independent, fulfilling, productive lives.
College of Law
Georgia State University College of Law professor Neil Kinkopf, an expert on U.S. constitutional law and presidential powers, has joined the U.S Department of Justice Office of Legal Policy. That office - which serves as the primary policy advisor to the U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder - develops and oversees implementation of Justice Department initiatives. College of Business
Twenty Georgia State business students from the country of Georgia had lunch Sept. 18 with Georgian First Lady Sandra Saakashvili, who praised them for their scholarship and reminded them of the role they will play in building the economy of the former Soviet republic. Many of the students are in a dual-degree program with Georgia State and the Caucasus School of Business in Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital. Bijan Fazlollahi, a professor in Georgia State’s Robinson College of Business and director of Robinson’s Center for Business Development in Transitional Economies, helped establish the Caucasus school more than a decade ago and since then has directed many programs there. In 2004, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili named Fazlollahi an honorary citizen of Georgia. The school now has more than 2,000 students and an American-style doctoral program.
Georgia State University Athletics
Georgia State volleyball's Jamiee Freeman has been named CAA Defensive Player of the Week by the Colonial Athletic Association Oct. 5. The true freshman scored a team season-high and career-high 31 digs in the Panthers five-set victory over Hofstra on Sunday. Freeman scored her second career double-double on Sunday against the Pride. Her 31 digs (6.2 per set) was the most digs in a match for State since Christen Garcia scored a Panther all-time record 45 in 2005 against Eastern Kentucky. Freeman added 10 kills in the match as Georgia State improved to 14-4 and 2-1 in CAA play. The Panthers are tied for second in the CAA standings.
Georgia State student-athletes volunteered for the "National Day of Play" as approximately 50 Panthers spent the day with local children. The National Day of Play is designed to promote physical activity and help combat childhood obesity by encouraging children to spend at least 60 minutes a day playing. Georgia State worked with Visions Unlimited and the Arthur Blank Foundation to participaqte.Student-athletes from Georgia State's football, women's golf, men's and and women's basketball and women's track teams volunteered. The Panthers spent several hours at the Magnolia Park Community Center in the Vine City area, playing flag football with the children. Members of the women's golf and basketball teams also lent a hand to paint the interior of the Magnolia Park Community Center.
Under the leadership of Director of Athletics Cheryl Levick, Georgia State athletics has established a goal of 3,000 hours of community service by Panther student-athletes during the 2009-10 year. Other recent projects including the CAA Blood Challenge, MS Bike Atlanta, and the Georgia State Community Plunge.
