The Perfect Angle
Thurs, September 11 – Thurs, November 6, 2008
"Perfection is one of those hollow words in our vocabulary. While it is applied to every facet of our lives, from the perfect body to the perfect job, from the perfect mate to the perfect retirement plan, from the perfect vacation to the perfect latte, it is a term that is as situational as any other in our common parlance. Perfection only matters to the speaker and then only in relation to the non-perfect, the ordinary or the base.
For this show, I chose four artists from the faculty and staff of the Welch School whose works give meaning to the word “perfection,” and, more importantly, lay bare its operations. They widen and narrow the measure of perfection, revealing that the superlative is indeed conditional. As you walk through the galleries, please consider such questions as: what industry is required to support the definition of perfection, what cultural apparatus ensures that it stays in place, and as we aspire
to the ideal, what is lost and at what cost?"
-Todd D. Smith, curator (2008)
Curated by Todd Smith, former Director of the Gibbes Museum, Charleston, this exhibition features the photography, drawings and installations by Nancy Floyd, Ruth Stanford, Conne Thalken and Joan Tysinger.
