2008-09 ProjectsStudent Sculpture Garden 2009
Each year a call goes out to the students of GSU to submit proposals for the Student Sculpture Garden Project. Faculty and staff of the Ernest G Welch School of Art & Design then review the proposals. An exemplary proposal is then chosen to be brought to fruition by the student and displayed in the Sculpture Garden for two years. The Sculpture Garden is located out of the Arts & Humanities building at Georgia State on the corner of Peachtree Center Avenue & Gilmer Street.
This gives students an opportunity to engage in a competitive project and, if chosen have their work publicly displayed, a privilege not often afforded to students.
This year we were given the oppotunity to award two students for the project. Jane Garver's "Borrowed Ground" was selected and placed in Hurt Park adjacent to the Arts & Humanities building & Emma Adair's "Bird Call" was selected and placed in the Sculpture Garden on Gilmer Street.

Le Flash comes to Castleberry for an evening of fantastical art and creative events to surround and celebrate the temporary public art project by Paris-based artist Kristina Solomoukha in Cleopas T. Johnson Park. Street corners, galleries, shops, roof tops, vacant lots and empty buildings will be sites for light, sound and unexpected installations, performance art, poetry readings, concerts, music, video projections, a marching band, an iron pour and art happenings of all sorts. Organized by Welch School Gallery Director Cathy Byrd and independent curator Stuart Keeler, in collaboration with the Castleberry Hill Neighbourhood Association, Friends of Cleopas Park, Clark Atlanta University and Savannah College of Art and Design. Sponsored in part by the French Cultural Services, the Franco-American Contemporary Art Exchange Foundation and the Fulton County Arts Council.
How can contemporary public art and actions in Atlanta animate our city’s shifting cultural landscape?
As the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs and Fulton County Arts Council Public Art Programs present new opportunities for public art projects, we have the opportunity to consider how local artists can animate our contemporary cultural environment.
The setting for our dialogue will be the John Hope Community Center adjacent to Cleopas Johnson Park where Mind the Gap Fountain, a temporary public art project by Paris-based Ukrainian artist Kristina Solomoukha, is on view through December 12.
Following brief presentations by local public art administrators and artists, Stuart Keeler, curator of A (new) Genre Landscape in city parks this past summer, will moderate a community dialogue centered on questioning the concepts, trends and emerging public art practice in Atlanta.
