Annual Appointments and Pay Dates
In keeping with the recommendation of the College of Arts and Sciences, graduate teaching assistants will be given annual appointments rather than term appointments. During last year's transitional period, a few graduate assistants (i.e. those who held fewer than two appointments) were paid as term appointments. The move to annual appointments is a positive one and means that graduate assistant salary amounts are the same each month. Graduate assistantships are part of your graduate education and can involve a combination of teaching, research, and service.
Returning GTAs:
Having an annual appointment means that you will receive an annual salary divided into twelve equal paychecks, paid on the last working day of each month, beginning in July 2003 and ending in June 2004. However, during this period of time, should your performance not be satisfactory, your appointment(s) may be reduced or terminated. Your estimated annual salary for the upcoming annual period consists of payment for the number of classes we estimate that you will teach during the year (Summer 2003, Fall 2003, and Spring 2004) plus any GRA or GLA appointments that we estimate you will hold. If the number of appointments you hold changes from the above estimate, we will adjust your pay in January accordingly.
New GTAs:
Normally, having an annual appointment means that you will receive an annual salary divided into twelve equal paychecks, paid on the last working day of each month, beginning in July 2003 and ending in June 2004. However, this year because you are a new Graduate Assistant, your pay dates will be slightly different. Your annual appointment will begin on September 1. Your annual salary will be paid in ten equal installments on the last working day of each month (September 2003-June 2004). However, during this period of time, should your performance not be satisfactory, your appointment(s) may be reduced or terminated. Your estimated annual salary for the upcoming annual period consists of payment for the number of classes we estimate that you will teach during the year (Fall 2003 and Spring 2004) plus any GRA or GLA appointments that we estimate you will hold. If the number of appointments you hold changes from the above estimate, we will adjust your pay in January accordingly.
GTAs Who Worked in the Center for Writing in the Summer:
Normally, having an annual appointment means that you will receive an annual salary divided into twelve equal paychecks, paid on the last working day of each month, beginning in July 2003 and ending in June 2004. However, this year because you were employed in the Center for Writing and Research in the summer and were paid on a term basis, your pay dates will be slightly different. Since you have been paid for half of your summer term payment on July 15 and will be paid the remaining half on August 15, your annual appointment will begin on September 1.
Pay dates are not determined by the department; they are established by the university. If you have any questions about the College policy, please direct them to Dr. Robin Morris, Associate Dean for Research and for Graduate Studies, who can be reached at (404) 651-2294 or psyrdm@langate.gsu.edu or to me. We are excited about the new year and are pleased that we will be working with you as you continue your graduate studies in the Department of English.
