Scholarly and Practical Insights into the Findings and Challenges of Assisted Living Research.
Mary Ball

This workshop, sponsored by the Assisted Living Interest Group, benefited seasoned and new researchers, practitioners, and policymakers who are interested in contributing to, learning about, or applying Assisted Living research.  Participants heard interactive presentations on fundamental AL issues including: resident health and quality of life, cognitive impairment in AL, AL service provision, AL workforce issues, and AL policy and regulation.

2007 Annual Meeting of the Gerontological Society of America. November 16-20, San Francisco.

Grandparenting in Africa: Kenyan Case Studies

2007 Annual Meeting of the Gerontological Society of America. November 16-20, San Francisco.

Relationships between Care Staff and Residents’ Family Members in Assisted Living Facilities: Exploring Work-Related Experiences and Outcomes.
Candace Kemp

Findings suggest that the creation of assisted living environments where staff and family members are empathetic of one another and view themselves as partners in the care process would have positive outcomes for AL workers, family members, and residents.

2007 Annual Meeting of the Gerontological Society of America. November 16-20, San Francisco.

To Care or Not to Care?  The Experiences and Meanings of Spousal Caregiving in Assisted Living.

2007 Annual Meeting of the Gerontological Society of America. November 16-20, San Francisco.

Defining Family through Inheritance: An examination of Step-ties and Bequest Practices.

Molly Perkins

Significant predictors of staff turnover intent are; race (non-white), higher levels of education, aspirations for career advancement, higher perceived workload, and having fewer dependents.

2007 Annual Meeting of the Gerontological Society of America. November 16-20, San Francisco.

Assisted Living Facilities vs. Nursing Homes and Home Health: Care Workers Motivations for Employment.
Michael Lepore

Worker turnover and shortages plague long term care.  Findings suggest that keeping assisted living environments homelike and maintaining staffing levels that assure manageable workloads and time to interact socially with residents will help maximize worker satisfaction and retention.

2007 Annual Meeting of the Gerontological Society of America. November 16-20, San Francisco.

The Job Satisfaction Color Line:  A Study of Assisted Living Facilities.
Mark Sweatman

Data collected from 370 staff and 45 assisted living facilities across Georgia examines predictors of job satisfaction.  Data suggest that the experience of racism is a compelling factor in comprehending job satisfaction, especially among native-born blacks.
