Students who study Gerontology come from almost every academic discipline in the university. The Institute encourages to actively participate in research, internships, and community outreach intitiatives. The institute organizes several activities for our students each semester.
Southeastern Student Mentoring Conference in Gerontology and Geriatrics
The Southeastern Student Mentoring Conference in Gerontology and Geriatrics seeks to provide students with practical experiences associated with academic and applied gerontology. The conference was conceived as a vehicle for students to network with key professionals in aging and to gain first hand experiences in all aspects of organizing and hosting a conference, including post-convention monographs and publications. Further, the conference is used to promote student professional development, share important student work in the fields of gerontology and geriatrics, and teach faculty/student mentoring.
Alzheimer's Memory Walk
Each year the Gerontology Institute teams up with the Alzheimer's Association to participate in their Memory Walk. This year we had over 30 students volunteer! Our students served on the advocacy team of the walk and collected over 1,000 post cards that will be sent to local legislators to encourage them to vote to fund Alzheimer's research.
