Interests:
Dr. King joined the staff of the Gerontology Institute in January 1999, one month after graduating from Georgia State University with a Ph.D. in sociology. Her research interests in caregiving and ethnicity and aging led to her dissertation topic, "Future-Planning among Older African-American Parents of Adult Dependent Children: Retiring from the Caregiving Career." Dr. King's other research interests include aging families and religion and health. She recently coordinated a statewide conference on minority aging at Georgia State. Dr. King is also a Minority Fellow with the Gerontological Society of America. She has served as either a co-investigator or project manager for several of the institute's research projects, including the AARP Andrus Foundation study of African American elders in small assisted living facilities and the National Institute on Aging grant on independence and autonomy in assisted living facilities. She is currently Principal Investigator for a pilot study, funded by the National Institute on Aging, on religion, health, and aging in multigenerational African American families. Dr. King also has served as an investigator on a grant funded by Senior Connections, Inc., titled "Family Relationships among Aging Asian Immigrants: The Role of Chinese and Korean Elders in Family Stability and Quality of Life." Along with Dr. Frank Whittington, Dr. King traveled to Kenya in February, 2003, to establish a gerontological research and education partnership with the Bureau of Educational Research, Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya.
