On Thursday April 24 Fitzhugh Brundage, William B. Umstead Professor of History at UNC Chapel Hill, delivered the History Department’s Dale Somers Memorial Lecture. Professor Brundage’s talk, “Is Southern History still a Front in the Culture Wars?,” addressed the issue of contested historical memory in the American South. He also delivered a faculty development seminar on the topic “Beyond Blackface; African Americans and the creation of American Mass Culture, 1890 to 1930.” Professor Brundage is the author of several books, including, most recently, The Southern Past: A Clash of Race and Memory (2005).
