Why study history?
As a student in the History Department you will become familiar with a large body of historical knowledge and through this understand current society all the better. You will also gain valuable skills as a reader, discussant, writer and researcher. Because the program focuses on analytic and critical thinking, a history major will especially prepare you for a profession or further studies in education, international studies, journalism, law, politics and public policy, just to name a few. What programs of study are available?
Georgia State University’s Bachelor of Arts in History offers students a broad-based and culturally-relevant course of study. As a student in our program, you have several choices in your major.
For the broadest curriculum options, consider the Bachelor of Arts in History. If you are interested in an in-depth look at world history and culture, our world history concentration is one of the only programs in the United States. If you would like to pursue teaching as a career, our pre-education track will have you well-prepared to enter any master’s-level certification program.
What opportunities does the History Department offer?
- Phi Alpha Theta, our international history honor society, holds regular gatherings and organizes regional conferences and film series.
- A World History Lecture Series brings prominent, nationally-recognized speakers to campus.
