THE UNIVERSITY Georgia State is located in the heart of Atlanta’s thriving urban community, in one of the most exciting and fastest-growing regions in America. Georgia State’s regional and national visibility has grown significantly under the leadership of its current president, Dr Carl V. Patton. The Athletic Director reports directly to the President, and will play an important leadership role for the institution, both within the institution and with the external community. THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM Georgia State is a Division I institution currently competing in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The University will begin competing in the Colonial Athletic Association in the fall of 2005. Student-athletes live in the University Village, the apartment-style housing site developed for athletes who participated in the 1996 Olympic Games, or the on-campus University Lofts. The Atlanta area provides opportunities for student athletes to experience a broad range of top –notch sports at both the collegiate and professional level. Georgia State currently offers 9 women’s and 8 men’s athletic programs. Its men’s and women’s basketball teams have had particularly successful seasons over the last five years, as well as a strong history (with two All-Americans and six players now competing on the professional level). Last Year, the men’s golf team finished 11th in the nation in the NCAA Championship. The athletic program has produced 20 conference championships in the last 5 years. The Athletic Director will lead a coaching staff of 30 and a support staff of 30, with an annual multi-million operating budget. THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate will have at least a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization, with at least 5 years of successful management experience in intercollegiate athletics. He or she will have hands-on caching experience, as well as a clear commitment to the student athlete, with demonstrated strengths in academic support. The candidate will offer a demonstrated regard for equity; strong business practices and fiscal management; a proven ability to recruit, evaluate, and mentor excellent coaches; outstanding interpersonal and communication skills; unquestioned integrity; and a dynamic leadership ability. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in annual and/ or campaign fundraising, and ability to attract external support to achieve the University‘s goal of enhancing its facilities, equipment, and operating support for the athletic division. Success will involve considerable positive visibility on campus, with students, faculty, and staff, as well as high visibility in the community, particularly with its 120,000 alumni, (75,000 of whom live in the Atlanta metropolitan area). The new Athletic Director must possess the energy and strategic vision to lead Georgia State University’s athletics programs to an even higher level commensurate with its academic preeminence. The University intends to fill this position by Spring 2005. The total compensation package will be competitive, and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
