Position Summary
The Student Affairs Advisor I for Student Media Organizations is responsible
for creating an environment that promotes the positive growth and development
of students who affiliate with Student Media organizations in order to
provide an integral and productive co-curricular learning experience at
Georgia State University. The position advises the student newspaper,
literary magazine, online magazine, radio station, and television station
and offers relevant programming in support of their leadership and organizational
needs. The position also coordinates the development of various department,
division and institutional publications.
Job Responsibilities
• Advises the student leaders and general members of the media-related
organizations and initiates, develops, implements and evaluates various
educational, training, accountability and recognition programs (e.g.,
retreats, awards programs, conferences) in support of leadership and organizational
needs with use of a strong foundation in student development theory.
• Exercises appropriate administrative oversight for the student
media organizations including budget management and fiscal responsibility;
membership development, training and retention; purchase and maintenance
of all equipment; and, adherence to university policies/procedures as
well as relevant federal, state and local laws/regulations (e.g., FCC,
First Amendment issues).
• Provides guidance to student media organizations in the creation,
implementation, and dissemination of their training and policy manuals
and in organizational development matters (e.g., setting goals, creating
mission statements) and makes recommendations for ways to improve efforts
in order to increase participation, and improve effectiveness of the GSU
media groups; evaluates operational policies among the student media and
makes changes, if necessary.
• Provides detailed information about media organization recruitment
opportunities to students and the Georgia State community and implements
all aspects of recruitment for media organizations, usually in conjunction
with a student planning team.
• Serves as a liaison between the student media and the Assistant
Dean/Director of Student Life and Leadership and the Dean of Students
office and creates/maintains collaborative relationships with other relevant
campus departments (e.g., Legal Affairs, Journalism Department, University
Relations).
• Serves as a liaison between student media organizations and Georgia
State University student body/community related to complaints, educational
efforts, advertisement and promotions of events, and awareness of student
media responsibilities and rights.
• Seeks assistance from within the Atlanta community to provide
specific training (e.g., news writing tips, production skills, internet
media concerns, etc.) and media specific events (e.g., Media Day Panel).
• Collaborates with Office of Student Life & Leadership colleagues
to advance ongoing programmatic initiatives (e.g., intercultural relations,
campus-wide student programming, greek life, and student leadership development)
through cross-training and/or coordination of projects as assigned by
the Assistant Dean/Director.
• Collaborates with Office of Student Life and Leadership colleagues
to promote and advance new and ongoing programmatic initiatives (e.g.
intercultural relations, Greek life and student organizations, leadership
programs, student programs and other special office initiatives) through
cross-training and program development.
• Coordinates the development of various department, division and
institutional publications including the University Staff/Student/Faculty
Campus Directory and the On Campus Student Handbook.
• Serves on Division and University committees as assigned.
• Assists in special projects assigned by the Assistant Dean/Director
of Student Life & Leadership, the Associate Vice President/Dean of
Students, or Vice President of Student Services.
Reporting Structure
The position reports to the Assistant Dean/Director of Student Life &
Leadership and is part of an office with an Assistant Director, four additional
Student Affairs Advisors, a Program Specialist, and Administrative Coordinator.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Student Personnel, Counseling, Higher Education,
or Communications. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Experience advising student media organizations. Prior work experience
with print media and/or broadcast media as a professional, an undergraduate
or graduate assistant. Prior experience coordinating the development,
writing and/or production of brochures, handbooks, etc. Knowledge of current
legal issues related to media organizations. Knowledge of FCC rules and
guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in Education, Mass Communication or a related field
and two years experience.

$31,000 to $38,100
