Position Description
The African American Student Services & Programs (OAASSP) Student Affairs Advisor I provides individual and group advisement to students and works collaboratively with relevant university colleagues, student organizations and community groups to initiate, plan, implement and evaluate programs, activities and services that facilitate the retention of African American students, with a targeted focus upon freshmen and sophomores. The position serves within an office with a director, student development specialist, Administrative Coordinator, and senior Administrative Secretary, and several graduate and student assistants.

Position Responsibilities
• Advises individual students and student groups in the Office of African American Students Services & Programs (OAASSP) with a particular focus on enhancing retention of African American freshmen and sophomores.
• Collaborates with OAASSP staff as well as relevant university departments, student organizations and community groups to initiate, plan, implement and evaluate programs, activities and services that facilitate the successful recruitment, transition and retention of African American students.
• Provides relevant training of student leaders and student staff in the delivery of a variety of OAASSP programs and services including the promotion of student leadership development of student organization members, student assistants and student programs participants through targeted and university wide events workshops and conferences (e.g., annual MAP Conference, Leadership Conclave, and Black Student Leadership Retreat).
• Serves as a resource person for student and the greater university community by providing referrals to, and follow up with, relevant offices, departments, community and student organizations.
• Maintains records and compiles information for a variety unit, department, division, and institutional reports (i.e., individual advising forms, periodic office reports, annual reports, university assessment reports, student learning outcome reports, student fee proposals); administers surveys and compiles/analyzes results in conjunction with other staff; maintains student tracking databases through university-side student information systems (i.e., Banner) as well as unit database systems; develops programs budgets and maintains record expenditures.
• Assists in other unit, department or division projects as assigned and serves as liaison between OAASSP and the Dean of Students units including participation in university-wide new student orientation programs, leadership development efforts, campus-wide student programming and community services initiatives.
• Some evening and weekend hours are required

Reporting Structure
The position reports to the Director of OAASSP and is a part of an office with a Director, Student Development Specialist, Administrative Coordinator, and Senior Administrative Secretary.

Preferred Qualifications
• Masters degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, or related field providing direct Student Services in programming, advisements, and student life.
• Experience advising individual students and student organizations.
• Experience developing and facilitating programs for student organizations.
• Evidence of knowledge and application of student development theory and practice.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• 1-2 years of experience working with diverse ethnic backgrounds, including African American students.
• Experience developing and administrating budgets and writing budget proposals.
• Experience developing, writing, and producing promotional materials (ie fliers, brochures, newsletters, and website content).

Minimum Qualifications
MASTERS DEGREE
Driver’s license is required.

Compensation
$26, 849 to $29,376
