Title: “Partnering to Create a Healthier Campus”

Principal Investigator: Cheryl Johnson Ransaw, Coordinator of Faculty and Staff Assistance

Sponsor: American Cancer Society

Introduction/Background/Purpose:

The Office of Faculty and Staff Assistance and Office of Student Health Promotion and Education are planning a major research Project and awareness campaign to educate the University Community on the hazards of tobacco smoking. This Project proposes to work closely with the American Cancer Society addressing a major concern about lung cancer and tobacco use on college campuses. The overall objective is to help reduce tobacco use and create a healthier campus.

In order to more effectively study the needs of the University Community, the Project will involve conducting a campus-wide survey to evaluate the current campus smoking policies and tobacco use among students, faculty and staff. In addition, a number of Project activities will be offered including campus focus groups and educational workshops co-sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

All Georgia State University students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in the research Project on a voluntary basis. The first phase of the Project began on April 20 th with a special kick-off/educational event, and is projected to end on November 17, 2005 , the Great American Smokeout Day.

Procedures:

All Georgia State University students, faculty and staff will receive information on the Project through email announcements, campus newsletters and flyers. There will be focus groups scheduled monthly beginning in June through November open to any student, faculty or staff willing to participate in discussions on tobacco use and campus smoking policies. All focus groups will be held on campus, and each group will be scheduled to last no more than 2 hours. There will be no video or audio taping during the focus groups. Focus group facilitators may take some discussion notes during the groups.

Hard copy surveys will be available for participants to complete on a voluntary basis at all focus groups and educational events. Online surveys will be distributed in the fall. Participants have the option to complete either hard copy surveys or online surveys, but should only complete one survey.

Risks:

There will be no foreseeable risks or discomforts to the participants involved in this research Project.

Benefits :

The results from the research study will offer valuable information related to tobacco use on campus. It is hopeful that participation will increase support and strengthen campus policies and programs.

Voluntary Participation and Withdrawal:

Participation in research is voluntary. You have the right to refuse to be in this study. If you decide to be in the study and change your mind, you have the right to drop out at any time. You may skip questions on the survey or discontinue participation at any time. However, any information already used to the point when you discontinue participation will not be removed. Whatever you decide, you will not lose any benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.

Confidentiality:

We will not keep any personal, individual private records during this Project. We will use a survey number rather than your name on survey records where we can. Your name and other facts that might point to you will not appear when we present this study or publish its results. The findings will be summarized and reported in group form. You will not be identified personally. All Project record information will be securely housed in the Office of Faculty and Staff Assistance.
