Social Justice Program
Why Social Justice? One of the common statements students have made over the years is while they enjoy our Intercultural Relations programming they feel all they ever do is talk about issues. With this in mind, the Intercultural Relations staff designed the inaugural Social Justice Weekend for October 2006 with the overall theme being Global Citizenship: How Individuals can Enact Social Justice. The goal of the retreat was to provide students with a foundation on real-world social justice practicies. In correlation with the weekend long retreat, student participants were required to work on a continuing social justice project. Students had the option to choose one of four social justice issues: immigration, poverty, education or the environment. Each student group has been required to research specific issues within their topic. The groups then hold a public presenation on their research which includes identifying the social justice issue as well as proposing a plan for individual action. In addition to the public discussion, the student groups are encouraged to actually intiate a social justice project of their own either within the Georgia State Community or Atlanta. Goals:
- To provide a safe environment for open and informative social justice dialogue
- To increase the level of understanding of the principles of social justice through the sharing of personal experience
- To provide a venue for students to engage in discussion on social justice topics
- To assist in the development of cross cultural communication skills
- To assist in the development of social justice enactment
- To provide students with the support to intiate a social justice project on thier own
