Georgia State University Surveys
The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) collects information from undergraduate freshmen and seniors at four-year colleges and universities across the country to assess the extent to which students engage in a variety of effective educational practices. The NSSE survey is grounded in the proposition that student engagement, the frequency with which students participate in activities that represent effective educational practice, is a meaningful proxy for collegiate quality. The College Student Expectations Survey (CSXQ) assesses new student goals and motivations. New students hold important expectations about how and with whom they will spend their time in college. These expectations provide clues about how they will interact with peers and faculty members, behaviors that directly affect achievement and satisfaction with college. Specifically, the CSXQ provides information on topics of interest to all colleges and universities, including new student expectations of: a) the nature and frequency of interactions with faculty members; b) involvement with peers from diverse backgrounds; c) use of campus learning resources and opportunities; d) satisfaction with college; and e) the nature of college learning environments. The Cooperative Institutional Research Program Freshman Survey (CIRP) is a survey administered to freshmen during fall semester. It is designed to assess attitudes, values, and aspirations of incoming freshmen including college expectations, secondary school experiences, degree goals, career plans, and college finances. The Survey of Recent Graduates is a survey administered each semester to all recipients of undergraduate and graduate degrees at Georgia State University. The survey focus is on learning outcomes, student engagement, academic program satisfaction, and employment status of recent graduates.
The Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) is designed to measure faculty expectations for student engagement in educational practices that are known to be empirically linked with high levels of learning and development. The FSSE can be linked to the NSSE in order to present a fuller understanding of the educational experience of students at Georgia State.
The Academic Program Review (APR) University Database is a merged file of survey data collected for departments under review during Fall 2003 and Spring 2004 (or departments that have administered a standardized APR survey during this period). Departments undergoing review are required to survey current faculty, student majors, and alumni. The surveys generate data for the department's self-study report.
The Administrative and Support Unit Review (ASUR) University Database is a merged file of survey data collected for administrative and support units that have come under review during Fall 2003 and Spring 2004. Administrative units undergoing review are required to administer an employee survey designed to elicit data on the general morale, attitude, and culture of the unit. Results are used to inform the unit's self-study report.
The Faculty Technology Survey was administered during fall semester 2004. Technology use in classrooms is driven by its availability, by students' and faculty members' ability to employ it productively in teaching and learning, and by expectations for its use. This survey was designed to assess faculty capability for making productive use of laptop/wireless facilities in classrooms.
