LRC Chimpanzees

Lana

  • Born 10/7/70, Lana's name was used as an acronym for the first LRC project, producing a LANguage Analog of human language in a nonhuman primate, in 1971. Lana is still a vital part of LRC research. She recently demonstrated her long term retention of lexigrams she hadn't seen in 20 years.

Sherman

  • Sherman is Lana's half-brother (they share the same father) and was born 5/10/73 at Yerkes Primate Center. He was co-reared with Austin, and they were assigned to the Language Project at ages 3 and 2 years of age respectively.

Panzee

  • Panzee, a female chimpanzee, and Panbanisha, a bonobo, were co-reared to test the linguistic competency differences between the two species. Born 12/31/85, Panzee is also very adept at mazes and puzzles.

Mercury

  • Mercury is Lana's teenage son. His father is either Sherman or Austin and he was born at the LRC on 11/15/86. After unsuccessful attempts to involve him with the language studies, he is now used in other research (see research tab).
