The Department of Mathematics and Statistics conducts teaching, research and service in many areas within the disciplines of mathematics and statistics. We offer baccalaureate and masters degree programs with a commitment to teaching courses in the core curriculum. The department is strong in several research areas, and is distinctive from departments in neighboring institutions. One obvious difference is that we provide educational opportunities for both traditional and non-traditional students by offering courses in the day and the evening.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has many exciting degree options both at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Our research strengths and close connections with several other departments enable us to provide students with a variety of programs.

At the graduate level, the Department offers a master’s degree. A PhD proposal has been prepared, and hopefully the PhD degree will become an option in Fall 2007. Currently, students can earn a master’s degree in mathematics without a concentration, or choose from concentrations in bioinformatics, biostatistics, discrete mathematics, scientific computing or statistics.

At the undergraduate level, students can opt for no concentration, or choose from concentrations in actuarial science, computer information systems, computer science, decision science, or statistics.

The department is housed in the College of Education building. There are 48 faculty members, 75 graduate students, and 175 undergraduate majors. We teach courses in a variety of mathematical areas and do research in more than a dozen diverse fields.
