11/06/2009 Faculty Search: Assistant/Associate Professor positions available

10/272009: 2009 American Statistical Association -- Georgia Chapter Meeting.

10/16/09: Dr. Draga Vidakovic has been invited for a research visit from October 20 till October 25, 2009 in the Department of Physics and Mathematics, University of Eastern Finland , Joensuu, Finland and to be one of the four plenary speakers at the Annual Symposium of the Finnish Mathematics and Science Education Research Association during October 22-23. During her visit she will also conduct a workshop on October 21 for graduate students in Mathematics and Science Education in the Graduate School .

10/15/2009: Dr. Johan Hattingh, Professor of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, has been invited to be one of the five plenary speakers at the 52nd annual congress of the South African Mathematical Society. The congress will be hosted by the Department of Mathematics in the Faculty of Science of the University of Johannesburg and held at the Eskom Convention Centre in Midrand from Monday, 2 November 2009 to Wednesday, 4 November 2009.

The list of plenary speakers, as finalised by the South African Mathematical Society's Council, are Prof. Alan Frank Beardon from the University of Cambridge, Prof. Maria Manuel Clementino from the Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal, Prof. Michael de Villiers from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Prof. Johannes Hattingh from Georgia State University, Prof. Heinrich Raubenheimer from the University of Johannesburg, and Prof. Anders Yeo from the University of London.

 

10/14/2009: Dr. Yichuan Zhao, an Associate Professor of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, has been elected as a member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) for the contribution in nonparametric statistics, empirical likelihood, and survival analysis. The International Statistical Institute is one of the oldest international scientific associations functioning in the modern world. Its first congresses were convened in 1853, and it was formally established in 1885. The Institute is an autonomous society, which seeks to develop and improve statistical methods and their application through the promotion of international activity and co-operation. The ISI is composed of elected members who are internationally recognized as the definitive leaders in the field of statistics.

10/08/2009: Dr. Mariana Montiel co-authored a textbook titled Una introduccion a la
Teoria de Grupos
(in Spanish) with Octavio A. Agustin-Aquino, Janine du Plessis, and Emilio Lluis-Puebla. The book covers various topics on Group Theory with applications to Mathematical Music. The book is in hard copy, CD and online in the electronic publications of the Mexican Mathematical Society. Ms. Janine du Plessis received herMaster Degree from our department under the supervion of Dr. Marinana Montiel. 10/08/2009: Dr. Yi Zhao received an NSA (the National Security Agency) Young Investigator grant, Turán and Packing Problems for Hypergraphs, $15,000/yr, 2009-2011.

10/08/2009: Dr. Florian Enescu received an NSA (the National Security Agency) Young Investigator grant, Hilbert-Kunz Multiplicities and Local Cohomology Questions in Positive Characteristic, $14,991/yr, 2009-2011.

10/08/2009: Dr. Draga Vidakovic received an NSF grant on Collaborative Research: Linear Algebra in New Environments (LINE), $38,244.00.

10/08/2009: Dr. Draga Vidokovic received an NSF grant, ( Co-PI), Robert Noyce Urban Mathematics Educator Program (UMEP), $93,805.
