With instruction in 12 world languages and innovative programs of study, the department aims to serve every student's language needs, regardless of whether you are seeking to fulfill a requirement for a degree program or are inquiring about our classes for the personal enrichment of learning a new language. The mission of the Department is to give students the opportunity to develop appropriate proficiencies in the modern and classical languages, to acquaint students with the literary and cultural productions of other countries, and to provide them the opportunity to acquire critical skills through literary and cultural analysis as they prepare for careers in teaching and research, business, translation and interpretation and other areas. The Department’s research mission is to contribute to the development, organization and dissemination of research and criticism in the focus areas of literature, culture, linguistics and language pedagogy. As a core element in the University’s mission of internationalization, the Department promotes international involvement by both faculty and students. MCL offers instruction in twelve languages as well as in foreign language pedagogy.
