Heritage Speakers of Spanish

If you speak Spanish at home, with your family, with your friends, or learned a lot of Spanish in high school, you may have a chance to get credit for the Spanish you already know.

This means that you can skip courses (and you do not have to pay for the courses you skip) and finally move faster to graduation.

This is what you need to do:

1. Go to http://www.gsu.edu/~wwwmcl/ and find ‘Placement Exam’ on the top menu.

2. Take the placement exam so that you can know what your real level of Spanish is. This exam will tell you which elementary class you need to register for. If you pass it, you could get the credit! If you want the credit, contact the GSU Testing Center at 404/413-1736. Tell them that you want to take the Spanish College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) Test for Spanish. The results on this test are immediately reported to the Registrar’s Office. This test, however, is not free ($88), but it is certainly the best investment at this time in your college career.

3. If you pass the Testing Center’s CLEP, maybe you can still have a chance for more credit. Contact Dr. Oscar Moreno at omoreno@gsu.edu. Most likely you will be asked to take a second exam in Spanish. This time you will be evaluated for placement in one of the advanced Spanish courses. If you pass this second exam, you will be granted credit for Span 3303 (Advanced Spanish Grammar) or Span 3501 (Advanced Spanish for Heritage Speakers). Again, you will be moving faster toward graduation.

CAUTIONARY NOTE

GSU cannot accept students in classes for which they are overqualified. This is typically the case of students who already have high proficiency in Spanish or are native speakers taking elementary Spanish courses. Apart from being a waste of money and time for the student (because you could already be working toward a degree in Spanish), the presence of highly proficient speakers of Spanish in basic Spanish creates level differences that affect the daily running and teaching of the class.

Not uncommonly do students believe they will have to work harder for a good grade if placed in a higher class. Well, you will. That’s what college is about. If you are here, take advantage of this opportunity by being recognized for a valuable asset you already bring to college—your Spanish. The preparation you will attain in a higher course in Spanish will open up a lot more professional doors for you after graduation. It’s also wise investment.
