Rare copy of Las Cantigas de Santa Maria is donated to Georgia State

Georgia State University has been fortunate to receive as a gift the facsimile edition of the 13th century manuscript from the royal scriptorium of Alfonso X of the Cantigas de Santa Maria, ms T. I. 1 of the Escorial Library. This manuscript of miracle stories and songs in praise of the Virgin Mary contains 196 poems, each illuminated in full color with music to accompany each piece. There are approximately 1400 illuminations illustrating the poems. There is an accompanying volume which transcribes the Gallician Portuguese texts and translates them into Spanish with accompanying critical commentary and all the music is transcribed into modern music. Dr. Annette G. Cash arranged for this gift from Victor Soler-Sala, President of UNICEF in Catalunya and Dr. Fernando Reati hand-carried these gorgeous volumes to Georgia State. They are housed in Special Collections in Library South and all are encouraged to bring classes there to see and study this work. Contact Laurel Bowen in Special Collections for an appointment.
