Georgia State University's Certificate Programs in Translation and Interpretation. The graduate-level certificate programs in translation and interpretation were inaugurated in 1979 within the Department of Modern and Classical Languages in the Georgia State University College of Arts and Sciences to provide professional training for bilingual students interested in international careers. Students may enroll in one or both programs. An advanced certificate is awarded following the successful completion of the courses in the prescribed sequence and satisfactory performance on the final certificate examination.

Translation

The translation program in French, German and Spanish is designed to develop advanced translation skills for students interested in acquiring a high level of proficiency in a specific language combination.

Interpretation

The interpretation program in French and Spanish is designed to provide professional training in simultaneous and consecutive interpretation for bilingual students interested in becoming conference interpreters. Applicants to the program must have completed the translation sequence or demonstrate a comparable level of written and oral proficiency in their source and target languages. Emphasis is on Medical and Legal interpretation.

Admissions

Qualifications

Admission to the translation and interpretation programs is based in part on the applicant's performance on entrance examinations. Generally, a baccalaureate degree is required for admission. For those who hold foreign credentials, acceptance will be based upon consideration of the applicant's total educational qualifications and experience.

Examinations

Applicants for the Programs in translation will be required to take an entrance examination testing their skills in English and their target language.

Entrance examinations are given each year for the session beginning in August. Candidates should contact the Department of Modern and Classical Languages to obtain time and location information and to register for the exams.
