Introduction | Invitation | Exploration | Explanation | Taking Action | Conclusion

Introduction:

Objective:

  • You will monitor the pH of the precipitation at your school for one month to determine the acidity of the precipitation in your area.

Materials:

  • pH meter
  • rain gauge
  • thermometer

Invitation:

Using the Internet, locate areas in your country where acid deposition is a problem. Check the Resources page of the Project Site.

What do you predict the pH of the precipitation in your area will be?

Exploration:

At your school, using the equipment listed above, monitor the pH of the precipitation for one month. Use the Internet or local weather forecasts to monitor and determine the direction of the prevailing weather. Post your data in the data table in the "Acid Rain" activity located at the CLEO WEB SITE.

The data will be posted in a data table that looks like this one:

Explanation:

Discuss the following questions with your teacher and classmates.

  • How accurate were your predictions about the acidity of the precipitation in your area?
  • How does the pH of the precipitation in your area compare to other areas posted?
  • Does acid precipitation appear to be a problem in your area?

Participate with other students by posting your answers to these questions on the Acid Rain Bulletin Board, and making arrangements with your teacher to have a real time chat with other students working on this project.

Taking Action:

  • Locate and report to your class any web sites that demonstrate any other acid precipitation monitoring exchange programs.

Conclusion:

What do you conclude about the pH of the precipitation in the area around your school?
Were your findings similar to or different from what you expected? Explain.
