Utilities Infrastructure

General Issues

Since the last building assessment in 1997, considerable progress has been made in upgrading mechanical and electrical systems. East Campus and West Campus Chiller Plants have been constructed and brought on line. Several buildings have been connected to these plants, relieving the problems of failing chillers, R-11 refrigerants, inadequate capacity, and other issues.

Facilities Management has done an extremely good job in an ongoing upgrade of HVAC air distribution systems and controls, electrical systems, and plumbing fixtures.

Emergency exit and egress lighting has been upgraded in most buildings and fire alarm systems have been replaced in a number of facilities. A few fire alarm systems in several buildings are marginal. In spite of minimal funding, progress has been made in all areas. Unfortunately, most of the buildings are quite old and much work remains to be done. Plans are in place to upgrade the remaining facilities as funding becomes available. See the individual building assessments for specific upgrades and needs.
