Building Conditions Summary

0006 - Arts and Humanities Building

The Arts and Humanities Building was built in 1969. Most of the spaces are older and worn, though some areas have been upgraded. (See Image 3.29)

The music program occupies two large spaces on the first floor; a choir room and a recital hall. Plans are in place for a major renovation of the recital hall in 2006. The sculpture and textile labs are in good spaces on the first floor. There are some good rooms on the second floor. A large computer lab, a digital computer lab, and the photography suite are in good condition. The jewelry lab, photo lab and classrooms on this floor are satisfactory.

Third floor classrooms are basic spaces with tablet armchairs. The lecture hall on the same floor is a pleasant space. Design studios are also on this floor and are very basic and outdated with few or no technological amenities.

Fourth floor labs for printmaking, photography and a computer lab called the “Creative Media Center” are satisfactory.

The fifth floor is dedicated to studio art labs. The rooms are overcrowded and otherwise in need of much attention. Although the building has undergone some improvements, it requires major renovation. Graduate studios, on the mezzanine level above undergraduate labs, are inaccessible and in bad condition. Some spaces are very high tech, but most are low tech.

Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning System: Boilers and systems are satisfactory. The building is currently connected to the West Plant.

Plumbing: Restrooms need to be upgraded; the fixtures and valves are old. Sump pumps are approaching the end of their useful life. There are roof drainage problems.

Electrical: Exit and egress lighting is upgraded, and have battery backup units. The electrical system needs upgrading.

This building has an emergency generator.

Fire Alarm System: The system is operational but needs an upgrade.
