Category 700 – Support Facilities
The CEFPI guidelines split the calculation of Category 700 space into two areas, Data Procession / Computer (710) and Shop and Storage (720/730/740.) The total FY 2015 CEFPI guideline space requirement for Category 700 space is approximately 437,000 ASF, a growth of approximately 371,000 ASF. The consultant’s detailed program calculation totals approximately 280,000 ASF, a growth of approximately 214,000 above existing.
CEFPI recommends a core space of 4,500 ASF for the first 5,000 FTE students, plus one to three ASF/ FTE students over 5,000. Considering the explosion of computer-related technology in the 20 years since the CEFPI guidelines were created, the need for this type of space is greatly reduced from the requirements in the mid 1980s. The calculated FY 2015 space requirement is approximately 17,750 ASF, compared with an existing 12,390 ASF. As no new computer equipment can be added to the existing space becasue of utility constraints (HVAC and electrical), a new facility should be considered for the network operations center.
CEFPI develops shops and storage as a percentage of all other spaces to be maintained. The formula includes total space in all categories other than this shop and storage space category times eight percent to arrive at an ASF. Since this is an urban campus and most of the supplies are delivered directly to the using units rather than purchased in bulk and stored on site, the factor of eight percent has been reduced to five percent.
The calculated FY 2015 space requirement is approximately 262,000 ASF, a growth of 209,000 ASF. This is a reasonable growth factor considering the severely limited space that is currently available.
